“I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT IN LIFE THAT SOMETIMES YOU SAY YES TO THINGS THAT TAKE YOU OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE. FOR ME, SOME YEARS ARE ABOUT BUILDING, AND SOME YEARS ARE ABOUT CHALLENGING.”
Daniel McCarthy is saying "yes" this year.
It's looking to be a typical day in San Francisco, the kind that can shift from foggy sunrise to pleasant evening and back again. But on this particular morning we are gifted a brief and breathtaking view of the expansive Golden Gate Bridge.
"THIS YEAR IS ABOUT DOING THINGS THAT I HAVEN'T DONE BEFORE."
That guiding philosophy is what compelled Daniel to show us why he's so passionate about Range Rover. It's what ultimately brought us together, now studying the long shadows of the California sun. "When I'm designing gardens, one of the first conversations with my clients is always, Where do you picture yourself at 5 p.m.?"
He explains his line of questioning: "It's the time of day where your mindset changes. We've gone from work into leisure. There's a serene and beautiful quality to light. And usually, you're exactly where you want to be."
Even when speaking off-the-cuff, Daniel paints a lovely picture with his responses. He is both thoughtful and measured, from his answers to his personal style and right down to his work in garden design.
"THERE IS A LOT OF PRECISION IN LANDSCAPE DESIGN. MANY INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS - TREES, TRELLISES, PLANTERS - THEY ALL CREATE THESE INVISIBLE LINES. YOU MAY NOT NOTICE THEM, BUT IT MAKES YOU FEEL REALLY CALM."
Daniel's appreciation for flora runs deep. Originally from London, he was taught horticulture at a young age by his grandfather. The order and balance he recognized in the rows of vegetables ignited a passion for designing gardens and later influenced his own approach as the founder of his own landscape design business.
In 2015, Daniel, his partner and their dog, a Rhodesian Ridgeback named Devon, took on the challenge and adventure of moving from the UK to the US, starting fresh in San Francisco, California. Stepping away from the landscaping business he spent years crafting was a challenge, but it also offered the opportunity to build an equally successful one stateside with lessons learned along the way. Now he keeps the business intentionally small, in order to stay involved in every stage of the design journey.
This new enterprise enlists a trusted network of contractors and artisans. It also includes Daniel's Range Rover. It's a vehicle that helps navigate a day that can start with walking his dog, see him selecting nursery plants in the afternoon and then taking off to meet clients. It also fits right in with Daniel's aesthetic of clean lines and symmetry. "The vehicle itself is very elegantly designed. The level of craftsmanship is understated luxury, and it's how I try and approach my work."
As the day winds down, Daniel sits calmly, comfortably in his garden. It's his own design, of course. Part of a six-year project that included renovating his own home, a classic Victorian perched on one of San Francisco's many hills. Like the garden, the result is an attractive lesson in precision, especially when bathed in the evening light. Daniel is proud of his achievements but not done with them.
"LIFE WOULD BE BORING IF YOU SUDDENLY REALIZED THAT YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'VE ACCOMPLISHED EVERYTHING."
He searches his thoughts to elaborate. “It doesn’t have to be material. It can be traveling more. Experiencing new things. Finding new perspectives. There’s always more to accomplish.”
